The $25,000 Schoolhouse That Helped Shape Lake Worth Beach (1914)

by Twins Selling The Palm Beaches

In June of 1914, The Lake Worth Herald announced something big for a small but growing coastal town:
A $25,000 schoolhouse was coming to Lake Worth.
At a time when Lake Worth was still developing into the vibrant community we know today, this was more than just a building — it was a bold investment in the future.
And honestly? It tells us everything about the vision this town was built on.
A Growing City With Big Plans
The newspaper headline proudly declared:
“Here’s the $25,000 School House to Be Built in Lake Worth”
In 1914, $25,000 was a serious commitment. Adjusted for inflation, that would be the equivalent of several hundred thousand dollars today — a major investment for a young Florida town.
The plans called for:
Concrete block construction
Twelve large classrooms
Modern conveniences (for 1914!)
Room for future additions
Even back then, Lake Worth wasn’t thinking small.
What This Says About Early Lake Worth
This wasn’t just about education. It was about:
✔ Stability
✔ Community pride
✔ Long-term growth
✔ Confidence in the future
When a town builds a large, permanent school, it’s a signal: “We’re not going anywhere.”
And that’s exactly what happened.
Over the next century, Lake Worth grew from a developing settlement into the artistic, eclectic, waterfront community we now call Lake Worth Beach.
Why Local History Matters in Real Estate
As someone who lives and works here every day, I love digging into pieces like this.
When buyers move to Lake Worth Beach, they’re not just buying a house — they’re stepping into:
A city with deep roots
Early 1900s architecture
Historic districts
Generational pride
That 1914 schoolhouse represents the same spirit that still defines this community: bold, resilient, and forward-thinking.
And that matters when you're investing here.
Then vs. Now: A Century of Growth
From a $25,000 schoolhouse… To:
Historic downtown revitalization
The Lake Worth Beach Golf Course
Street Painting Festival
Waterfront parks
Boutique neighborhoods full of character
Lake Worth Beach has always believed in building for the future.
And we’re still doing it.
If you love local history as much as we do — or if you’re thinking about buying or selling in Lake Worth Beach — we’d love to talk.
Because when you understand the roots of a place, you understand its value. 🌴
